Carol & Martha's Wedding
2020-05-09

Carol writes:
After more than years together, Martha and I decided to get married. Overnight the pandemic changed the world, and we had been observing our Constitutional rights being challenged in many ways. Since we both are in our 70’s, the legal protections of marriage make our future more secure than without it. We also were concerned this right to marriage could be taken away in the future and we should avail ourselves of the rights we have now. The future is not discernible at this time, but we know that whatever comes, we will be together and continue to give each other strength.

We had a great wedding experience - especially considering the times! We used a company based in D.C. to get our marriage license on-line by proxy and provide an officiant to sign the papers anywhere inside the District of Columbia. They also take care of getting legal certified copies to us. We never needed to wait in security lines or appear at a courthouse so this was the safest way to go. Anyone can get married in Washington D.C.

Joy Newheart and Beth Anderson came with us to Montrose Park in Georgetown for our signing. From the time we were notified our marriage license was available until our signing, was less than 24 hours! Although we would have loved to announce our impending ceremony to our Friends, we felt it was too dangerous to everyone’s health if friends took this opportunity to leave their homes. We will throw a celebration party when it is safe to do so.

Afterwards, the four of us came to our enclosed porch, where we could practice social distancing, for tea and cupcakes. We also brought some carry-in fried chicken dinners! Although my grandmothers might be tuning in their graves, we used their 100 year old Flo Blue china for our wedding feast!
