Steve Mummendey, Memorial Service
at Adelphi Friends Meeting, Maryland
2020-01-18
Steven Arthur Mummendey, born in 1954 to Arthur
and Josephine, grew up in Franklin Park, NY. In the
1960s, the family moved to the Woodmont
neighborhood of Silver Spring. They established the
family mechanist shop on Bonifant Street, where
three generations worked and Steve learned to fix
anything. His practical skills and problem solving
genius led to his career and to many hobbies and
community contributions. He was on the crew who
built the WAMU Public Radio transmission tower.
He joined the US Postal Service as a letter carrier
and was trained for increasingly senior operational
and management responsibilities. In 2001 when
anthrax was mailed through the postal system,
Steve was on the response team. He cleaned the,
postal sorter which killed two co-workers. Steve's
humor showed up everywhere: dressed as a
magician he would help a neighbor with frozen
pipes or a broken computer. Deep in the official risk
management protocols for post offices are the
response procedures for a Zombie Apocalypse.Steve
married Carol Zarrella, their son Dan Mummendey
was born April 15, 1980. Steve was delighted to know
his grandchildren Kaiden and Kailey Mummendey.
In later years, Steve had a special role in the lives of
Melissa Neeley and Geywa Elliott, and Eli and Jesse
Greer.Recently, Steve and Annie Storr divided time
between Silver Spring and Cape Ann, MA, where
Steve discovered a second home.
