Obituary of David Frank Percy
After a short illness, David Frank Percy, of Orange City, Florida, passed away on September 28, 2022. Born February 13, 1959, in Northern Ohio, he was a longtime resident of Northfield, Ohio. After graduating from Cleveland Heights High School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, David moved to the Daytona Beach, Florida area in 1977. There, he studied Air and Meteorological Science at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. After many years living in Ponce Inlet, Florida, David moved to Astor, Florida and most recently, to Orange City, Florida. There he lived with his dear friend of more than 30 years, Connie Matovich, with whom he enjoyed bird watching and playing with her pet dog.
Son of Frank E. Percy, Jr. and Ruth A. (Renner) Percy, David is predeceased by both of his parents, his maternal grandparents, Dr. & Mrs. R. Richard Renner, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Frank E. Percy, Sr., all of Cleveland, Ohio. He is also predeceased by his brother, Brett E. Percy, of Ravenna, Ohio.
“Mustache Dave”, as he was known to friends, was an expert auto mechanic and diagnostician. He partnered with friends and business partners Douglas Cotton, Sr., and Glen Smith, to found Corvette Excellence, LLC., a Chevrolet Corvette customizing company in the Daytona Beach area.
Later, David worked for Advance Auto Parts in Port Orange, Florida, which named him its “Best Part” in 2003, highlighting him in their company magazine, and rewarding him with a trip to the corporate office. Since 2004, David has been an entrepreneur and the owner of Auto Advice, an auto consulting business.
In his early 20’s, David became a member and later, a trustee of the Renner Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio, where he served on many committees. He also served local libraries and other charity boards.
A world traveler, David has driven all over western Europe, circled the southern tip of South America, and traveled extensively in Africa, and Australia, and most of the British Isles. An avid boater, David enjoyed rescuing people (and critters), fine dining, partying, aviation, and all types of motor sports.
David loved to laugh, and his unique personality and handle-bar mustache kept him highly visible and beloved by those who knew him. He would often weave his crazy, zany, and unique happenings into fascinating stories. David, along with his best friend since seventh grade, Paul Adams of Northfield, Ohio, formed an on/off road stunt driving club, infamously named the “Bonsai Riders.”
David loved to play and jest, watch race car movies, animals and entertaining with friends. A unique, and vibrant personality, David will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
David is survived by his sister, Jennifer Percy-Falls, brother-in-law Richard (Rick) Falls, of Central Tennessee, his brother, Kevin W. Percy, and sister-in-law Pamela Percy, of Central Florida, two nephews, his aunt and uncle, Dr. & Mrs. Daniel S. Renner of Gates Mills, Ohio, and many beloved cousins.
