This is both Utersum's grocer and post office. Plus, you can buy Manhattan, if you want.
These maps of each town are helpful to find destinations, beach access, public toilets and walking paths.

In the custom of "talking tombstones" in Föhr, a ship indicates that the deceased person was a sea captain. If, as here, the ship has no sails, that indicates the person died on land.
A ship with sails indicates a death at sea.

 There are more with sails.

Laura: How beautiful this is.
Richard: That means we need a picture.
 Windmill in Oldsum
The top line is the town's name in German. Below that is the name in th local North Frisian dialect, Fering.
I did not expect to see a zebra in Föhr.
Toftum is the town where my Great-Grandfather, Theodore F. Arfsten was born and raised.
This house is located where my Great-Grandfather was born, in the home of this maternal grandparents. However, this is not that house. Instead, the neighbors told us, it is a new house built by somebody rich who is present here only occasionally.

This is a photo from my mother's visit to Föhr in 1990. One of the archivists in Alkersum identified this woman as Gardina Josina Godbersen, who lived in Toftum lot 230.
Here are today's residents of Lot 230 in Toftum, Geraldine's son, Cornelius Ketels, and his wife, Silte. They are my second cousins.

Here is their family photo with their two children.
They have the same St. Laurentii genealogy book that I just purchased.

I don't know what this means, but we proceeded down the unpaved driveway anyway, to Toftum Lot 240a. Karen, the archivist, identified it as the home of Thyra, another of my second cousins.
Here is Thyra! Today is her 87th birthday!

Thyra points to a family photo of her mother, with her (on the left) and her three sisters. Her father returned to Föhr and was conscripted into the German army. He was sent to the Eastern front, was captured by the Soviets and died of an untreated medical condition in 1946.

The top photo is Thyra's grandmother.
